Study in New Zealand

Study • Work • Graduate • Build Your Future

New Zealand is an excellent destination for international students looking for quality education, practical learning, work opportunities, and strong post-study career options. With flexible study pathways, scholarships, and opportunities for eligible graduates to gain international work experience, New Zealand can be a strong choice for Pakistani students.

Study Options in New Zealand

Students can choose from a range of pathways based on their academic background and career goals:

  • • Foundation Programmes: Ideal for students who need an academic pathway before progressing to undergraduate study.
  • • Diploma Programmes: Practical and career-focused qualifications that can also provide pathways to further study.
  • • Bachelor's Degrees: Available across business, IT, engineering, health, science, hospitality and many other fields.
  • • Top-Up Degrees: Selected institutions offer degree-completion options for students with relevant previous qualifications.
  • • Master's & Research Programmes: Suitable for graduates seeking advanced academic knowledge, professional development or research experience.
  • Work While Studying

Eligible international students can work up to 25 hours per week during their studies, subject to their visa conditions. Full-time work may also be permitted during specified holidays.

    Post-Study Work Visa

New Zealand provides attractive post-study work opportunities for eligible graduates.

Eligible Bachelor's graduates can receive up to 3 years of Post-Study Work Visa, while eligible Master's graduates can also receive up to 3 years, subject to Immigration New Zealand requirements.

From 16 November 2026, eligible graduates from certain Level 7 Graduate Diploma pathways may also qualify for a Post-Study Work Visa if they meet the new requirements.

A new Short-Term Graduate Work Visa will also provide up to 6 months of open work rights for certain eligible graduates who do not qualify for the standard PSWV.

    Green List & PR Pathways

New Zealand's Green List covers occupations where skilled workers are in demand. Depending on the occupation, qualifications, registration and employment requirements, graduates may qualify for Straight to Residence or Work to Residence pathways.

Choosing a programme connected to an in-demand occupation can therefore be an important part of long-term career planning. However, studying a particular course does not automatically guarantee PR.

    Bring Your Spouse

Students studying an eligible Level 9 Master's programme may be able to support their partner for a Partner of a Student Work Visa.

Certain Level 7 and Level 8 qualifications may also provide partner work rights where specific Green List or other eligibility requirements are met.

    Scholarships & Tuition

Selected New Zealand institutions offer scholarships and tuition discounts for international students, with awards that can reach 30% or more, while higher awards may be available for eligible high achievers.

Students applying from outside New Zealand may also be able to use Approval in Principle (AIP), allowing tuition fees to be paid after approval in principle, subject to the visa process and requirements.

    Intakes

Major intakes include: February | July

Additional intakes may be available depending on the university and programme.

    Study Gap & Entry Options

New Zealand offers options for students with different academic backgrounds. A 1-year gap after Intermediate can be acceptable for many programmes, while applicants with longer gaps may also be considered based on their academic history, work experience, and chosen programme.

For suitable applicants, selected institutions may also offer Top-Up Degrees and flexible pathway programmes.
